ICW 2020: CIDB launched a five-year strategic plan to equip Malaysia’s construction industry with digital technologies
Kuala Lumpur, 24 November 2020 – Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia officiated the Construction Week International 2020 (ICW 2020) and ASEAN Super 8 Virtual Connect on 17 November 2020. The event, which is first held entirely virtual after 22 years, aims to provide a platform to facilitate discussions between leaders in digital construction in order to revolutionise Malaysia’s built environment sector.
The five-year construction strategic plan 4.0 (CR4.0) aims to change the Malaysian construction landscape to become smart and sustainable, which later on is expected to gear Malaysia towards being a market leader in Southeast Asia. Minister of Works Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Haji Yusof emphasised that this year’s ICW theme Embracing Construction Revolution will prepare the construction sector with the right technologies and reduce the dependence on low-skilled labour with low productivity.
Needless to say, the COVID-19 situation has been accelerating the digital adoption in all Malaysian sectors, including construction. More companies have now innovated their operations and made large investments in technologies. Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Haji Yusof said, “Technology adoption is no longer a government directive, but has been part of survival that changes people’s mindset. If the industry leaders in construction wants to survive in this increasingly competitive market, they must be prepared to adapt to the digital revolution.”
CR4.0 strategic plan aims to bring together all the latest technologies such as AI and AR (augmented reality) as well as 3D printing in all construction processes to improve productivity and quality of work. Aside from changing the industry’s digital landscape, this strategic plan will also prioritise the well-being and competency of workers.
The four strategic thrusts of CR4.0 are:
Capacity development
Excellence in research, innovation, commercialisation and entrepreneurship
Smart integrated technologies, innovation and infrastructure
Enhanced business environment
